A Core Values Exercise · Find Your Core Values in 30 Minutes

Who Are You Beneath It All?

Not who you've learned to be. Who you actually are.

Thirty minutes. Your five actual core values. A clear picture of where you're already living them, and where you're not. So you can stop building your life around who you think you should be, and start building it around who you are.

Who Are You Beneath It All? — A Core Values Exercise by Go Lightly Life Coaching, shown as a spiral-bound workbook on a warm wooden desk with a candle and coffee

You're doing everything right. So why does it feel like you're living someone else's life?

Maybe you've been the responsible one for so long you can't remember what you'd choose if no one needed anything from you. Maybe you say yes when you mean no. Not because you're weak, but because somewhere along the way, that's just what you learned to do to keep the peace.

"I don't even know what I want anymore. I've been so focused on what everyone else needs that I've completely lost the thread back to myself."

You've built an entire life around who you've had to be. The achiever. The caretaker. The one who keeps it together. The people-pleaser. The strong one who doesn't ask for help. And those roles have served you. But they've also cost you something. Yourself.

At some point you stopped asking what you value. You started asking what's expected. And the gap between those two things? That's where the exhaustion lives. That's where the quiet resentment comes from. That's why you feel vaguely off-course even when everything looks fine on the outside.

This exercise works differently. It asks you to look at what made you feel most alive, what has upset you most deeply, and even what you secretly envy in other people. Because your instinct tells the truth before your conditioning does. The goal isn't to pick aspirational values. It's to uncover the ones that were always yours.

Questions that keep showing up

Why do I feel empty even when my life looks full?
Is this actually what I want, or what I was taught to want?
How do I stop living for other people's approval?
Who am I outside of my roles?
What do I actually value, and am I even living that?
Why does it feel like I've disappeared?

These aren't small questions. And they're not going away on their own. The people who feel most lost aren't the ones who've failed. They're often the ones who've spent so long succeeding at being what everyone else needed that they never had space to figure out who they were.

Here's the thing: your values didn't disappear. They've just been buried under years of conditioning, expectations, survival, and adaptation. This exercise is designed to help you find them again.

Not to reinvent yourself. To remember yourself.

  • You feel like you've been living on autopilot
  • You keep making choices that look right but feel wrong
  • You know something is off but can't name what it is
  • You're at a transition point and need to get clear before you decide anything
  • You've done the therapy, read the books, and still feel like something's missing

Five Parts. One Through-Line: You.

This isn't a quiz and it's not a personality test. It's a guided exercise that goes deeper than a list of buzzwords.

Part One

The Untangling

Examine the roles you've played to feel loved, safe, or accepted. Start separating what's genuinely yours from what was survival.

Part Two

Gut Check Values Rating

Rate 50+ values on instinct alone. Fast, honest, no overthinking. Your first instinct often tells the truth faster than your conditioning does.

Part Three

Narrow It Down

From 10 to 5. Distinguish what's truly core to you from what's aspirational. Sit with the difference without judgment.

Part Four

The Alignment Check

For each core value: Are you honoring it? Betraying it? Where did it come from, and does it still feel true?

Part Five

Living It

Values are only useful if they shape how you actually live. This part translates your five core values into concrete, intentional action. Not aspirational language.

You just read through five parts of an exercise designed to change how you see yourself.

The question is whether you do anything with that.

Jak, Go Lightly Life Coaching

Hi, I'm Jak.

ICF-Trained · Life Coach · Go Lightly Life Coaching

This exercise came directly out of my 1:1 coaching work. Time and again, people would sit down with me having no idea what they actually valued. Only what they'd been performing. This workbook is the first step I give every client before we do anything else. Because you cannot build an aligned life if you don't know what you're aligning to.

They didn't know who they were anymore either.

★★★★★

"Jak is deeply intuned, intuitive, and calm, and she asks questions that turn my thinking around. I feel more grounded and capable after my coaching sessions with her."

— Deondra Carter
★★★★★

"Working with Jak has been nothing short of amazing. She's helped me shift my thinking, leading me to make better decisions for myself. She holds space and truly cares about her clients."

— Taylor Goode

Before you go. A few things people ask.

Is this just a list of words to circle?

No. There is a values list inside, but it's one part of five. Before you ever get to it, you spend time reflecting on your peak moments, your strongest emotional reactions, and what you secretly envy in others. Those three things tell you more about your values than any list can. The list just gives you language for what you've already found.

How long does it actually take?

About 30 minutes if you move through it steadily. Longer if something stirs emotion and you sit with it. There's no timer. Some people do it in one sitting. Some come back to it over a few days. Both are fine. The workbook is yours to return to whenever you need it.

What do I actually receive?

A digital workbook delivered instantly to your email. You can read it on any device, print it out, or work through it in a notes app. It's a PDF-style guide with reflection prompts built in throughout all five parts.

Is this therapy?

No. This is a coaching tool for self-reflection. It's designed to help you get clearer on who you are and what you value. If you're in a mental health crisis or need clinical support, please reach out to a licensed professional. This workbook is for people who are ready to do intentional inner work, not people who need emergency care.

What if I've already done values work before?

Most people find that what they thought their values were and what actually shows up in this exercise are different things. Especially the alignment check in Part Four. It's one thing to say you value freedom. It's another to look at where you're actually betraying it every day. If you've done this work before, think of this as a recalibration.

Seven Dollars to Stop Living Someone Else's Life.

Before: you make decisions based on what's expected, what's safe, what keeps everyone else comfortable.

After: you know exactly what you're optimizing for, and you have language for it.

"One question before you close this tab:"

When was the last time you made a decision based on what you actually value, not what's expected of you?

Stop Performing. Start Living.

Thirty minutes from now you could know your five core values, where you're honoring them, and exactly how to start living them more intentionally. Or you could close this tab and keep going through the motions.
